Only one runner will represent Burke County at Saturday’s state championship cross-country meet in Kernersville.
He is East Burke High School’s Chance Sigmon (17:34.13), who earned his trip to State with an 11th-place finish at this past Saturday’s 2A West regional meet in Hendersonville.
“Chance has been focused on making it back to the state meet since last year and I am happy that he accomplished that goal,” said East Burke coach Jonathan Dameron.
Sigmon was one of the top five overall runners not on a qualifying team. His Cavaliers finished in eighth, with 217 points. Clay Byrd (18:41.08) in 42nd place led the other Cavalier runners.
The Lady Cavaliers, behind Brittany Porter’s 16th-place finish (21:28.10), also placed eighth.
Porter fell two spots short of a berth in the state championship meet. five other Lady Cavs runners, led by top-40 finishes Austin Hoffman (25th-22:00.47) and Rachel Picciano (33rd-22:19.87), placed in the top 100.
“Both the guys and girls were the top finishers from our conference today,” Dameron said. “These kids should be extremely proud of what they have been able to achieve in a short period of time. We have a special group of seniors, many that had never run cross-country before, that will be missed next year.“
Another Burke County runner who fell short of a state championship spot was Patton’s Noah Green (11th-17:11.35).
“I was disappointed for Noah,” said Patton coach Carl Schilkowsky. “He had a great year and his time was an 18-second personal record for that course at Jackson Park, so he ran as well as he could. He is just a sophomore and if he keeps working hard and improving, he has a great shot at making states next year.“
The six other Patton men finished in the top 100, with Austin Winters (33rd-18:15.80), Ben Humphries (36th-18:17.77), and Justin Kuhn (48th-18:44.22) in the top 50. the Panthers were seventh with 180 points in the 3A west regional.
“the boys ran hard, averaging 18:16 as a team over the last two meets and that is what they ran (Saturday),” Schilkowsky said. “Patton placed 11th at this regional last year and this year we moved up to seventh. Placing seventh, with the many strong cross-country teams, is a real accomplishment.“
Kaitlyn Berry’s 43rd-place finish (22:54.11) led the Lady Panthers, who were 14th with 414 points.
“I was really proud of my girls who competed while missing two teammates,” Schilkowsky said. “the girls who chose to run ran well and proudly represented Patton.”
Three other Lady Panthers placed in the last part of the top 100 individuals.
Draughn High had seven top-100 finishers at the 2A west regional meet. Jessica Browning (37th-22:32.88) and Bobbie Colon (38th-22:33.18) led the Lady Wildcats to a 13th place finish (315).
Zach Shuping (46th-18:49.04) led the Wildcats to an 18th-place finish (476).
“Saturday’s meet was a great way to end the season,” said Draughn coach Patricia Drake. “all ran well and the experience they gained from participating in such a large meet will benefit them next year.“
Both Freedom High teams combined for five top-100 finishers at the 3A west regional meet.
The Patriots (16th-461) were led by Kevin Reid (62nd-19:15.35). the Lady Patriots team (18th-514) were led by Montana Gramer (95th-26:05.61).

Apparently when Cory headed back to work after the holidays, the 'larger' Cory may have not fitted into his football uniform.
Finn Hudson is a very popular quarterback on McKinley High School's football team.
He is also a member of Glee. The son of a single-mom, Finn rediscovers his love of music when reflecting on his childhood and his mom’s boyfriend Darren. After seeing Darren spraying Emerald Dreams on the football field, he decides not to abandon the club after all and returns to help orchestrate their first real song — Don’t Stop Belivin’ by Journey.

Monteith was attracted to the fact that Finn "isn't just a dumb jock", but instead "walks a fine line between following his dreams and balancing what other people expect of him."
He is dating cheerleader Quinn, but is conflicted by his growing feelings for Rachel.
Quinn later tells Finn she is pregnant and he is the father. Finn intends to support her, unaware the father is actually his best friend Puck.
He believes he is the father of Quinn's baby despite the fact that they have never had sex.
Finn's father was killed in Operation Desert Storm. He tells Quinn's parents that she is pregnant by singing "You're Having My Baby" to her, causing her parents to confront the young couple and subsequently throw Quinn out.
Finn's mother then allows Quinn to move in with them. Finn ends up finding out that Quinn's baby is Puck's because Rachel told him so she could have him to herself finn ends up breaking up with Quinn and is no longer friends with Puck.
Finn quits glee club because of the incident but ultimately comes to the rescue when the other glee clubs at jane adams academy and haverbrooks school for the deaf steal McKinleys setlist for sectionals and he brings in a song for them to sing.
